Problem Carolina Polo and Carriage Company (CPCC) operate private horse and carriage tours in historic downtown Charleston, SC. The horses are stalled in close proximity to hotels, restaurants, motels and retail stores. Each horse typically produces approximately 50 lbs of wet manure (feces plus urine) daily plus about 10-20 lbs of bedding per day. In general, manure plus bedding will have a volume of about 3 cubic feet per horse per day. Consequently, ammonia and other nuisance odors generated by the horse manure are of principal concern. CPCC required an odor adsorption and neutralizing technology that was easy to apply, highly efficient, and cost effective.

Solution USERRG chemists designed a simple 2 step treatment process that involves: 1) application of liquid OdaLock™ LART directly to stall floors prior to freshwater wash down, and 2) application of granular OdaLock™ ART prior to installing fresh stall bedding. The recommended application rates for OdaLock™ in a typical 12’x12’ stall are 16 oz of liquid OdaLock™ LART and 1.4 lbs (3 cups) of granular OdaLock™ ART.

Results Since adopting OdaLock™ Technology as part of their manure management program, dramatic reductions in ammonia and other nuisance odors generated by the horse stable, have occurred. Greater than 95% reduction in ammonia volatization occurs within 15 minutes of OdaLock™ application. The general improvement in air quality has resulted in a cleaner environment for the horses, CPCC employees and the surrounding community.
